How to Become a Mentor to Young Aspiring Writers

Young aspiring writers often need input from experienced persons who were once in their shoes. Brimming over with raw talent, young writers need help to hone their skills and realize their ultimate potential. An experienced writer can have a tremendous impact on a young writer, not only by helping him to develop a style or voice, but also by aiding in the direction and focus of his work. Follow a few simple steps to become a mentor to young aspiring writers.

    Achieve a level of expertise or excellence in your own career. Working professionally as a writer and gaining experience in the publishing industry gives a potential mentor lots of credibility as a mentor.

    Contact local schools, colleges or universities. Ask school officials about their writer's programs, creative writing classes, journalism projects (such as newspaper and yearbook) and any other writing-intensive creative outlets.
