Hunting safety is an important set of skills for every hunter to learn. An instructor must be able to convey all information to learning hunters so they can properly utilize those skills. Many hunting safety instructors in Michigan are volunteers. This article will tell you how to become certified to teach hunter safety in Michigan.
Steps
Method 1 Certification Prerequisites
You Must:
- 1Possess a high school diploma or GED and be 18 years old or older.
- 2Pass criminal background checks. You will not be considered if you have any felonies. You will also be rejected if you have had any misdemeanors in the past 3 years.
- You can also be rejected if you have violated any Natural Resource Law that resulted in a revoked hunting/trapping license in the past 5 years.
- 3Graduate from a basic hunters safety course if you were born after Jan. 1, 1960. Prior hunting experience can be substituted if you were born before this date.
Method 2 Application Process
- 1Obtain an application package from the Marketing Education and Technology: Recruitment and Retention Section, which is a division of Natural Resources and Environment.
- 2Look over the provided materials and take the included test within 45 days of receiving the application packet. You must pass the test with an 85% or higher.
- 3Assist a certified instructor with one hunting safety class. The certified instructor must sign your application as a mentor.
- The instructor will decide if you have the knowledge and ability to teach a class alone.
- 4Finish your application and test completely and submit them to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
