If you're throwing a party in which you're serving alcohol and your guests expect to consume alcohol (and get inebriated), that can be expensive! This article will help you figure out how much alcohol you'll need so that you don't spend any more money than you have to.

The active ingredient in any alcoholic beverage is Ethanol, or Ethyl Alcohol, which has the compound formula C2H5OH. This tutorial will be based on the active ingredient to cost ratio.

### Method 1 Calculate the cost of ethanol in dollars per fluid ounce

**If given Proof, Cost, Total Volume, calculate d using the following formula:**a((b/2)/100)/c = d- Where
- a = total volume of beverage in fl oz,
- b = proof of beverage,
- c = cost of beverage,
- d = amount of ethanol in ounces you get per dollar spent

- a = total volume of beverage in fl oz,

### Method 2 Calculate quantity of ethanol required

**Note that these assume that the time you start ingesting and the time you finish ingesting is between 3 and 6 hours.** - 2
**If you want to get buzzed, calculate g using the following formula:**0.025*f = g- Where f = total weight in pounds of people involved, g = total amount of ethanol required

**If you want to get drunk, calculate g using the following formula:**0.035*f = g- Where f = total weight in pounds of people involved, g = total amount of ethanol required

### Method 3 Example 1

You have a combined total of 975lbs of people you want to get drunk and you only have 35 dollars to spend.

**Calculate the total quantity of ethanol you're going to need.**- 0.035*975 = 34.125 oz
- This means you're going to need 34.125 oz of ethanol.

**Divide this by the amount money you have to spend.**- 34.125/35 = 0.975 oz/$
- This means you have to find a beverage that provides 0.975 ounces of ethanol per dollar.

## Tips

- Collect keys at the door and don't let anyone drive home drunk.
- The beer with the highest active ingredient to cost ratio is Steel Reserve at 1.424oz/$. The highest active ingredient to cost ratio for spirits is Mr.Boston Vodka Blue Label at about 1.217oz/$ depending on what size you get.

## Warnings

- The amount of ethanol required to reach a given level of inebriation formulas have other dependencies such as: gender, level of hydration, if you've eaten recently and how much, how fast you drink, and your tolerance.
