How to Choose to Do the Right Thing (for Christians)

The question; the huge question is not what is the right thing; but how to choose to do the right thing! After all, the answer to the first question was very easily secured for us by Eve on the eve of her eviction from the garden. She ate from the 'tree' of the knowledge of good and evil. Ever since that day we human types have had the knowledge of the right thing to do, and what not to do! Unfortunately, we also inherited another little trait from Eve... the unending desire to taste forbidden fruit! Alas, ultimately we find no pleasure or satisfaction in choosing to do the wrong thing, and so, our great need is to learn how to choose to do the right thing and reap the benefits of well doing!

We need to understand that our decision making is a very complex process, encompassing not only our knowledge and desire, but also much input from other sources. Start with your knowledge of what is right in the situation. Add your desire to do the right thing. Now notice the first input; probably yourself. You are just to tired or lazy, or it will cost you something; perhaps your money or comfort or time. Next, the input of former training or prejudices; you may subliminally hear your parent's voice of disapproval. Now, a dark input comes from the spirit world; the same voice Eve heard long ago. (He has a vested interest in your choosing not to do the right thing as he is the champion of evil.) He sends whatever thought or fear it will take to dissuade you right into your mind, and you may never discover it is not your own.

We need to learn to sort through and decide what input we will allow to influence our decisions and reject or disallow those sources that cause us to choose to do wrong. Think and reflect upon your tendency to make bad choices over and over again. When we have jumped the wrong way there is usually a pinpoint moment we made that decision that we can remember. Find that reason, source, or input and use that as a lesson for the future. Begin to review your decisions before you make them. Am I afraid? Selfish? Choose to override yourself even if you must!

We need to equip ourselves with the Enforcer to back us up as we eject evil voices that speak into our lives; freeing us to choose to do the right thing. That would be the Holy Spirit that comes from God, the source of all that is good and right. You may obtain Him from God, simply by asking for Him, as it is written in the Scripture; Luke 11:13 "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" Jesus said, "And you shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you..." This actually gives us the strength and ability to say no to evil and yes to good.

We need to surround ourselves with reinforcements to make this admittedly difficult task easier. That could be other people who are choosing to do the right thing; It is much easier to do right at a little league game than in a nightclub! Fill your mind with good thoughts by reading good things, watching clean uplifting movies, opening your eyes to the blessings you are already enjoying... your health, family, etc. Most importantly, read the Word of God that He has left you to be your encouragement and guide. Pray often for help and you will receive it.

Practice, practice, practice. We get very good at what we do often. And it gets easier too!

  • If you are wondering what to do about all the bad decisions behind you... all the evil things you have already done, there is good news for you. God, the source of all good, has already made a way for it all to be taken from you and your record can be completely expunged. He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to pay for your sins by accepting your punishment in advance. Jesus, who always chose to do the right thing, was glad to do that for you, dying by execution. You may contact Him and arrange to accept His gift offer simply by praying to the Father in the name of the Son, Jesus. He would like for you to be baptized then and to begin walking the way He did... by choosing to do the right thing!

  • You will find that you will not choose to do the right thing every time. We all fall down. Just get up and go again. The longer you walk this way, the better you will get the hang of it and the less often you will stumble. So, walk on. Peace and blessing and joy shall follow you all the days of your life and, no doubt, you shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever!
