Marcasite jewelry is known as the white form of fool's gold.[1] This article provides a simple method for cleaning/polishing this somewhat fragile jewelry.

Buff using a chamois cloth. Alternately, buff with a jeweler's polishing cloth or a silver polishing cloth.

Tips

  • Always spray perfume and hairspray before wearing your jewelry.
  • Always remove your marcasite jewelry before doing any activities involving water, such as washing dishes, cleaning, bathing, swimming, etc.
  • If you feel that you need a stronger cleaning solution, ask at a local jewelry store for a suitable cleaning solution.

Warnings

  • Avoid the use of water. If you must spot clean a piece, do so with only a damp cloth and dry it immediately after. Most jewels attached to marcasite are set with water-based epoxy and this will come off if immersed in water and the jewels will become loose.
  • Dish detergent dissolves the glue on marcasite jewelry.[2]
  • Silver dip will dissolve the glue also.[3]

Things You'll Need

  • A soft brush
  • A polishing cloth such as a chamois, a silver polishing cloth or a jeweler's polishing cloth
