How to Defend Yourself Against an Attacker Who Is Grabbing Hold of and Pulling Your Hair

If it's never happened to you before, you may think that trying to disengage safely from a person pulling your hair is a complicated process. The process is actually very simple, and can be executed by anyone of any age. Knowing how to perform this skill can be essential for slipping away from a would-be assailant.

Steps

    Bring yourself in an upright position.

    Place both of your hands on the aggressor's hands and lock your fingers together tightly and squeeze.

    Push the aggressor's hand down firmly to apply a locking technique - this will reduce the pain of having your hair pulled.

    Turn your head and body in toward the aggressor, maintaining a firm grip.

    As you complete your 360 degree turn, you will feel his/her grip start to loosen. By this time, you would have inflicted a degree of pain on the aggressor and he/she should have released your hair.

    Apply pressure with your thumbs in a forwards and downward motion.

    Push the aggressor away, or kick him/her in the solar plexus. This is located just below the sternum and above the navel, in between the ribcage.

    Run away as fast as you can while the aggressor is incapacitated and phone the police as soon as possible.

Tips

  • The faster you turn, the more effective it will be against the aggressor as it would make it easier to encourage him to let you go, through the pain inflicted on his tendons, joints, and muscles.

Warnings

  • After you have successfully managed to make him let go of your hair, DON'T make an attempt to fight him/her. The aggressor will probably be physically much stronger than you and will only get more angry and resort to even more violence against you.
