How to Determine if a Sapphire is Real

Sapphires are beautiful gemstones of the mineral corundum. It's normally blue, but impurities can give it different colors including yellow or white. Read this guide to check if your sapphire is real or fake.

    Inspect the surface of the sapphire stone with a 10-power jeweler's loupe or microscope. 10-power is the best because you can easily see microscopic flaws in the stone. Look closely, note out any air bubbles or micro-scratches that may be visible, even with the naked eye. These flaws indicate fake sapphire.

    Point out the true clarity of your stone. Use a 10-power magnifier once again. If you didn't pay a zillion money for that sapphire, yet it has no inclusions or blemishes, then it's almost certainly a cheap fake stone. Inclusions are not only common in sapphires, but in any type of gemstone.

    Compare the suspect sapphire stone with a certified real sapphire. Look at the difference.
    1. Can you notice that the colors are lighter in the fake one? Real colors are really strong.
    2. Take a look at the facets. Are the facets on the suspect stone grooved, rounded, simple and cheap, then chances are it's a fake! Real sapphires are nicely cut clean and pristine.

    Compare the suspect or fake stone with a piece of glass of the same color. If they look the same color, then its probably a fake.

    Take your sapphire stones to a professional, reputable jeweler to get a certificate and examine your stone's authenticity for sure.
