How to Do the Over the Top Tap Dance Step

Two Parts:Left Over the TopRight Over the Top

The "Over the Top" step is a common, intermediate tap step concept. This article will explain how to execute it properly.

Part 1
Left Over the Top

  1. 1
Extend your left leg in front of you at about 90 degrees. Be sure to point your toes and engage your core, in order to stay balanced.
  2. 2
Do a small demi plié with your right leg. This helps you to prepare for the jump. Keep your left leg high; don't let it drop!
  3. 3
Jump. As you jump, your left foot should spank back and your right leg should cross over the extended left. Aim to land on your right leg in a demi plié, with the left leg in a low passé (behind right leg).

Part 2
Right Over the Top

  1. 1
Extend your right leg in front of you at about 90 degrees. Engage your core and stretch your feet as you extend.
  2. 2
Demi plié with your left leg to gain power for the jump.
  3. 3
Jump and cross the left leg over the extended right leg while your right foot spanks back. This might seem a bit complicated at first, but keep practicing! You should land on your left leg in a demi plié and the right leg in a low passé (behind the left leg).

  • Make sure that your tap shoe laces are double-knotted and tucked in to prevent tripping.
