How to Get a Tax ID

If you are starting a new business, opening an estate for a deceased loved one, or creating a trust, you will need a tax ID number, formally known as an Employer Identification Number (EIN). An EIN is used for identification when filing taxes and employee withholding for businesses. There are many ways to file for an EIN. You can fill out a form and apply by mail or fax, apply online, or apply over the phone.

    Get IRS form SS-4, called "Application for an Employer Identification Number." You can download it by visiting to view and print the IRS form SS-4. Or, call the IRS and request form SS-4 to be sent to you.

    Fill in the information in sections 1 through 7. Leave sections 3 (Trade name of business) and 4 (Executor, administrator, trustee) blank if they are not applicable. Complete section 8 if you are applying for a number for a limited liability company (LLC).

    Choose the type of entity from the options in section 9. If your business type is not listed, check the box for "Other" and fill in the information on the blank line. Do the same in section 10 (Reason for applying).

    Complete sections through 18. Skip section 13 if your business does not have any employees. If you expect your business's tax liability to be $1,000 or less in a year, check the box in section 14.

    Sign and date the form at the bottom of the page. If there is a person that is handling legal matters for your business, have that person sign and date the form under the "Third Party Designee" section.

    Make a copy of the form for your records. Mail the form to Internal Revenue Service, Attn: EIN Operation, Cincinnati, OH, 45999.

    Fax your form if you have are able to send and receive faxes and if you do not want to mail it. Fax to (859) 669-5760.

    Wait up to four 72 hours to receive the number via fax or weeks to receive your EIN by mail.


  • You can apply for the number online by opening your Internet browser and navigating to the web address Fill out the application and submit it. You will then receive the EIN immediately. Print off the confirmation page for your records.
  • You can apply for the EIN over the phone by calling (800) 829-4933 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 m. Monday through Friday local time. When the agent reads the EIN back to you, write it down for your records. You will still be required to fax or mail the form to the IRS to complete the application process.
