Don't be his idea of perfect, Be YOUR idea of perfect/awesome/amazing/beautiful, and let him love you for it. If he can't, then he isn't the guy for you. You deserve someone who loves you. Don't change yourself just to be someone else's. Its the first BIG sign of not loving yourself. Its the first big sign of not respecting yourself.

Have sex when you are ready to. If you don't feel loved or his equal, don't have sex. Sex is not a way to obtain love, but an expression of love and affection/attraction that already exists. You're welcome to say no (and yes) whenever you want, ALWAYS. If he respects you, he will respect your decision.

Make sure that you're very clear with your decisions. If you say 'No', do it with confidence. Guys are slick, but think about the future, not the present.

Relationships are 50/50, Not 10/90. If he doesn't wait around for you, don't wait around for him. If he can't make the effort, why are you making all the effort? Do what it takes to tone down (but not completely stop) your affectionate behavior. limit how frequently you text him first, don't shower him with presents, do him less favors, don't make yourself 100% available all the time, etc. this is called reciprocity.

Have your own life. Have your own friends, your own goals, your own activities (a job, school, a club, etc) Some amount of independence makes every relationship healthier. You'll respect yourself and remember who you are. Your boyfriend should be a part of your life, not the whole damn thing. And if he cares for you, he will support your goals.

Stand up for yourself. When you disagree or have a fight, stand up for yourself. Defend yourself when you know you are right. Don't be a pushover. AND don't you dare ever let him be abusive towards you. That's when you tell yourself "I may not be perfect, but no matter what I've done this behavior and always will be inexcusable. I am leaving NOW." And don't look back.

If you are having problems, talk to him about it. Everybody deserves to know what's going on and to have a warning for big problems. Express everything you need to say in a concise manner. And if you really want the problem to be resolved, present constructive solutions.

Beauty is not everything. You can't keep a man by just being pretty. At the end of the day he loves your personality and seeing you happy. So have a positive attitude, be yourself, and dress/look the way that makes you feel good about yourself.

Tips

  • When you've moved to a new town or started a new job, make sure you get real world friends before you dive into a relationship, abusers look for people who are isolated and lonely.
  • When you first start dating he must take you out on a date. Do not fall for the "I really want to spend time with you but I'm to poor to take you out" routine. While this sounds reasonable guys always interpret girls who don't care about money as not thinking that they are worth anything. Even if you don't equate love and money other people often do.

Warnings

  • This will NOT be easy. But tell him how you feel. If he's the one, then he'll understand his mistakes, and slow down.
