How to Get Wrinkles Out of Silk

Wrinkled silk is easy to fix with these quick cures. Choose between light or heavy wrinkles, or consider steaming.

Method 1
Light wrinkles

    Set the iron to a cool setting. Silk burns easily, so don't make the iron too warm.

    Turn the silk item inside out.

    Place the silk on the ironing board. Put a cloth over the silk. For example, a thin towel.

    Iron out the wrinkles. Don't leave the iron on any one spot for too long.
    • If you need a little dampness, spray water gently on the towel or cloth.

    Hang to dry. This will remove any final wrinkles.
    • Turn the silk fabric the right way out to dry.

Method 2
Heavy wrinkles

    Soak or spray the fabric. Dampen it completely. However, wring the fabric if it's dripping wet.

    Iron the silk. Using an iron on a cool setting, iron to remove the wrinkles. Don't rest the iron on any single area for too long.

Method 3
Steaming out wrinkles

    Hang the silk item in in a bathroom. Have a shower and allow the steam to work around the silk item. The steam will help remove the wrinkles.

    Use a handheld steamer. Hang the silk item up. Move the handheld steamer over the wrinkles, both front and back, to remove the wrinkles. Follow any specific instructions provided with the handheld steamer.

Tips

  • If washing silk clothing, simply hang to dry and the wrinkles will fall out under the weight of the drying clothes.
  • Some irons have a steam setting. However, you will still need to place a cloth over the silk prior to ironing.
