How to Make a Cactus Pincushion

Pincushions are useful for keeping pins and needles in one place, the sharp ends tucked safely away from fingers. Beyond utility though, pincushions have long been a source of creativity, shaped by the sewer into all sorts of whimsical shapes to brighten up the needlework basket. The cactus pincushion is no different––it too is a whimsical shape, destined to bring cheer every time you use it. It's also an ideal gift idea for garden lovers and people who adore miniature objects.

Method 1
Making a small cactus

    Cut the felt. Trace templates as shown in the first of this trio of images. You'll need:

    • Small cactus: Five small pieces of light green felt, similar to a petal shape

    • Large cactus: Three large pieces of dark green felt, similar to a petal shape

    • Flowerpot: Four angled (trapezoid) side pieces in brown felt, one smaller square base piece and one larger square top piece.

    • Soil: One square beige piece of felt slightly smaller than the flowerpot's top square.

    Sew the small cactus pieces together. Referring to the above image for guidance, sew the five small petal pieces together using overcast stitch, leaving a small space for stuffing. Add the quilt wadding to stuff, then sew the opening shut.

Method 2
Making a large cactus and soil

    Sew the large cactus using the same method as the small one (above).

    Sew both cacti together on the soil layer (beige piece).

Method 3
Assembling the cactus pincushion

    Stitch the top felt to the soil layer felt. See image for guidance on attachment.

    Using blanket stitch, sew the four trapezoid sides of felt together to form the flowerpot.
    • Sew the flowerpot top/soil layer to the flowerpot box, again by blanket stitch.
    • Sew the bottom felt layer last. Leave an opening, put the quilt wadding in, then sew the opening shut.

    Done. Stick some pins and needles into the cactus pincushion to finish its prickles!

Things You'll Need

  • Felt in brown, beige, light and dark greens
  • Sewing threads (use strong thread, such as embroidery yarn, in a distinctive color)
  • Needle
  • Scissors suitable for fabric
  • Quilt wadding
