How to Make a Display Case from Egg Cartons

Show off rocks, shells or other small items from a favorite collection in this display case made from egg cartons and an acrylic box frame. It's easy and a fantastic way to recycle an egg carton into a useful object again.

Steps

    Cut away the back of the cardboard box part of the frame. Tape the corners of the front section to make a tray.

    Trim the top and front flap off the egg cartons.

    Trim about 1/2" (1.27cm) from each short end. Before doing this, it's recommended to measure the exact amount by checking against the tray you've just created.

    Fit the cartons into the cardboard tray made in an earlier step. Try on the acrylic cover to make sure everything fits. Note that the acrylic cover is not quite as deep as the egg cartons.

    Paint the egg cartons. White will show off most items best, but any color can be used.

    Glue the dried egg cartons into the cardboard tray. Allow to dry before using.

    Place your rocks, shells or whatever you want to show off into the cups of the egg cartons. Slide on the acrylic cover. Secure to the back with clear tape. It's now ready for display.
    • You can use glue or tacking putty to secure the items into each egg carton hole.

    • Drill small holes in the top of the acrylic frame for hanging, if you want.

Tips

  • An 8" by 10" (21.5cm x 28cm) frame can be used if you cut two cups off the end of each egg carton.
  • If you're displaying rocks or other sturdy items, you can moisten the egg cartons, press the items into the cups, then take them out and let the carton dry before painting. This creates customized spaces for the objects.
