How to Make a Pocket Tie

Lacking a good place to keep your wallet or phone while wearing a suit? Create this incognito pocket behind your tie to hold a variety of light/flat items. This trick works well for both men and women as the pocket tie can be created on a variety of surfaces.

Steps

    Cut or remove seam along the back of the tie. This will reveal the base of the tie and overall shape (when not stitched together).
    • Leave the piece of stiff white cloth in tact. This cloth gives the tie its shape.

    Cut your pocket from the small piece of fabric. Consider sizing it up with your phone or wallet so you achieve the ideal size/shape.
    • Use sharp scissors to cut your square, which should be 1” larger than the intended shape, all the way around the square.

    Create the pocket. Iron fabric and then use your straight pins to pin in place. Leave a ½” fold around the pocket.
    • Lay pocket on tie to ensure it is the right fit.
    • Stitch pocket.

    Create another pocket, the same size as your first pocket. Cut, iron, pin and sew.

    Sew pockets together, leaving the top of the pocket open/free. This is where you will insert your phone, credit cards, etc.

    Attach pocket to the inside of the tie. Turn the tie inside out and carefully pin the pocket in place. Make sure you don’t go through the outer fabric (you don’t want to see the stitching on the outside of the tie).
    • Sew tie in place, taking care to secure it to the inside fabric of the tie. Don’t forget to leave the top of the pocket open.

    Add a snap button to the inside of the tie in order to keep the fabric closed.

Tips

  • Add pocket to an old tie or one that you don’t mind altering.
