Have you been thinking of trying something different this holiday season? Something creative, vegetarian and Kids friendly. Well “Hello Kitty Figurine” is perfect for the occasion. This article will guide you on how to make Hello Kitty figurines and use them on various occasions.

Items required

  • White fondant
  • Green, red, yellow and black food coloring (pink & blue optional)
  • Edible glue
  • Powdered sugar

  1. 1
Prepare colored fondants. To make different colored fondant from white fondant use different food coloring's according to the colors that you want in your Hello Kitty. To add color follow the below steps:
    • Take sufficient amount of fondant for each color so that you don't have to make more in case of any shortage of a particular color. Flatten the fondant into a round disc. Now add your desired amount of coloring or flavoring to the center of the disc and fold the disc over itself to enclose the flavor in the center of the fondant ball.
    • Knead the ball of fondant. You'll notice streaks of color coming through from the center. Continue to knead until the streaks are gone and the fondant is of uniform color. Your colored fondant is now ready to use. Fondant dries out quickly so keep it covered or wrapped in a plastic wrap and store Fondant in a plastic bag when not in use or being used.
  2. 2
Prepare the mat for use by sprinkling powdered sugar over it.Use the white fondant to make a ball for the Hello Kitty head. Gently press the ball to decrease the thickness and make the face side smoother.
  3. 3
Punch two slight indentation at the left and right side of the fondant ball by using the ball tool. Now Pinch left and right side of the ball up by using your finger to form ears. Again use the ball tool to mark the ear holes to give it a finishing touch. Gently press the edges of the ears to make them more protruding and smoother from the edges by using the ball tool's edge grip.
  4. 4
Mark three holes on the face side for eyes and nose, by using the pointed side of a brush. Form two small balls of black fondant and one small ball of yellow fondant by using a Small piping of tip #3. Use toothpick to get the balls out of the piping. Now take a little amount of edible glue using a brush to stick the black balls in to the eye holes and the yellow ball to the nose.
  5. 5
Make a flat butterfly shape for the bow by using red fondant. Also make a small flat round shaped red fondant and stick it in the middle of the butterfly shaped fondant with the help of glue to complete the bow. After finishing stick it below the left ear on the head in a tilted manner by using edible glue.
  6. 6
To form the whiskers of Hello Kitty either you can paint them with black food color or use black fondant to make the whiskers. To make the whiskers with black fondant, make a thin long spindle shape and cut them into six small pieces of about 1 centimeter (0.4 in) and arrange them symmetrically on the left and right sides of the face to form the whiskers. Fix them using the edible glue. Press them a little into the face by using ball tool or your fingers.
  7. 7
To make the body of the Hello Kitty, make a 3–4 centimeter (1.2–1.6 in) long oval shaped white fondant ball and flatten its base to make it stand. Press the front and back part of the body gently with your palms to decrease the side width of the body while it’s still standing. Make an indentation on the top of the body by using a ball tool to attach the head.
  8. 8
Make a thin flat blue strip of fondant of about 3/4th of the size of the body and wrap it around the bottom part of the body by using edible glue. Now make another thin flat strip from red fondant of width equal to the leftover upper part of the body and wrap it from top to meet the end of the blue strip to complete the shirt. Now make two thin blue strips (with ovular ends) of 3-4 mm width and attach these to blue the pants over the shoulders to complete the shoulder strap for the pants. Stick two flat shape white buttons using white fondant at the point where the straps join the pants.
  9. 9
For hands, make a shooting star shape using white fondant. Gently press the shooting star shape to decrease the width. For right hand create a small grit at the shooting star’s head part along its width using a knife and smoother them down to create a thumb, similarly do for the left hand and make sure that the gritting is done at facing part of the hand. Now for remaining fingers grit the outer part of the hand’s ending to create fingers. Make sure to grit fondant about 2 mm deep to make fingers look cute.
  10. 10
Now as hands are ready, attach them to the body using edible glue or toothpicks if needed. Make a flat oval shape using red fondant and cut them into half. Now stick these semi-oval shapes to the hands attached to the shoulders to complete the red shirt. (Use the facing width of the hand as reference to create your flat oval shape) To add more detail attach a thin spindle shaped fondant of any color other than red and white to these oval shaped ends to add detailing to the shirt.
  11. 11
Attach the head of Hello Kitty and the body using a toothpick and a little amount of edible glue at the attachment site to assemble them together. Make sure the toothpick is not to long when compared to the height of Hello Kitty and if it’s long then trim the ends to make it fit the height of Hello Kitty.
  12. 12
For shoes make two oval shaped fondant balls and flatten them to decrease the width. Slightly indent in the middle to give the shoe some finishing. Now press the shoes in the middle to make a place for the body to sit while the non-pressed part will act as a bulging shoe part.
  13. 13
Place your Hello Kitty on the shoes resting part while still supporting the back side of your Hello Kitty to check the stability of shoes. In case of any instability add a little more white fondant at the back to support the body of Hello Kitty. Stick the shoes and support to the body using glue or toothpicks if needed.
  14. 14
Now cut a circular flat fondant of pink color using fondant cutters of size approx. 8–9 centimeter (3.1–3.5 in) or any type of designing cutter to create a base decoration for the Hello Kitty. Now just place your Hello Kitty on top of this decorative base.

Method 1
Customizing Hello Kitty

Standing Hello Kitty

  1. 1
To make a standing hello Kitty with visible legs, customize the leg part of the Hello Kitty. To make shoes roll two small black fondants (or whatever shoe color you want) into a ball and flatten them in the shape of infinity (∞) but with a less narrow middle part. Indent two holes at the narrower end of the shoe by using a ball tool.
  2. 2
Roll two cylindrical shaped white fondants of diameter big enough to fit the holes created in the shoe. Fix the cylindrical fondants into the show using glue. Make a flat circle of white fondant of diameter equal to that of the cylinder or the created hole and cut them into half. Now attach these semi-circular white fondants to the shoe and attach a black color spindle shaped fondant at the boundary between leg (cylinder) and the semi-circle to make a strap for the shoe.
  3. 3
Now attach a small white fondant button at the straps to finish the shoe. Insert two toothpicks into respective legs and attach the body of Hello Kitty using a little glue and these toothpicks. Make sure some part of the toothpick is coming out of the shoe so that the instability of the Hello Kitty can be compensated by attaching them to cakes, cupcakes etc.
  • Caution: Standing Hello Kitty are unstable due to hanging mass in between and thus toothpicks are necessary to make them stand on cakes and other bakery items. Avoid making them stand on hard surfaces as the tension in the toothpicks may cause the structure to fall.

Sitting Hello Kitty

  1. 1
To make a sitting Hello Kitty, customize the positioning of the legs. Simply make the shoe from the desired fondant color and attach them vertically to the facing part of the Hello Kitty using edible glue or toothpicks if needed. You can also attach the legs with shoes as created in the “Standing Hello Kitty” method by attaching them horizontally with glue and toothpicks present.

Hello Kitty Holding Accessories

  1. 1
Use florist wire to customize Hello Kitty. This will allow Hello Kitty to accessorize with various stuffs like a purse, lollipop, cotton candy, Umbrella and various other accessories.
    • Holding Balloons: Bend one end of the florist wire to form a loop by using pliers. Now make a balloon shaped or any balloon shaped fondant of desired color. Indent a hole through the fondant and insert the loop part of florist wire into it and press the fondant to cover the hole. Now insert the other end of the wire through the body of Hello Kitty and customize the hand nearer to it, to make it look like holding the balloon. Make sure you don’t make the accessory item too heavy or else Hello Kitty will become unstable and also place the wire in such a way that most of the wire is stuck in between the body of the Hello Kitty. To make the balloon lighter you can use cotton candy to fill up the material inside the fondant.
  2. 2
Similarly customize the other holding accessories and make sure, not to make it heavy or else Hello Kitty will become unstable. Use lighter fill ups instead of using fondant as a fill up material.

Hello Kitty Dress Customization

  • Hello Kitty with Full sleeves: In this step instead of covering the upper parts of the hand with semi-circular fondants, one has to cover the whole hand with the desired color of the shirt by making rectangular sheets and wrapping the hands in them.
  • Hello Kitty in Winter Clothes: To do this part simply covers the whole body with a flat rectangular fondant of desired color and dress the same for hands.
    • You can also add a scarf around Hello Kitty’s neck by making a rectangular strip fondant with ribbon ends and decorating it with various small circular flat shaped fondants. Decorate the winter outfit by adding curly fondant strips around them along with the small fondant buttons. You can also hang a snow skateboard as an accessory around the hands.
    • To add a winter cap, make two thin flat replicas of head of Hello Kitty along with ears by using fondant and then stitch the ends of the cap by using your fingers leaving the wearing part open. Add curly fondant edges to the cap and fit it to your Hello Kitty.
    • For shoes add a curly fondant edge and since the cap covers the whole head, add a snowflake shaped fondant at the top of the head instead of a bow to complete the whole winter outfit
  • Hello Kitty in shorts: To do these simply reduce the width of the pant and increase the width of the shirt for the body.
  • Hello Kitty in Skirt: To do these follow the following procedure.
    • Flatten a fondant ball of desired color to a thickness of 1 mm using rolling pin and then cut out a nice circular flat fondant from a 8.5 centimeter (3.3 in) diameter fondant cutter.
    • From this circular flat fondant cut out another small circular fondant by using a fondant cutter of diameter 3–4 centimeter (1.2–1.6 in) and remove the circular part as we need the part from which it was cut. Now cut a sector from the remaining part of width 2-4 mm.
    • Now using the smaller diameter and the cut made, we fit the skirt to the body of Hello Kitty and stitch the loose ends by using fingers. Your Hello Kitty’s skirt is ready.
  • Hello Kitty in Frocks: To do these follow the following procedure.
    • Flatten a fondant ball of desired color to a thickness of 1 mm using rolling pin and then cut out a nice circular flat fondant from a 8.5 centimeter (3.3 in) diameter fondant cutter.
    • Now put it over the body (This has to be done before the head is attached) and nicely curl the frock around the Hello Kitty’s body. After setting up decorate the frock with small cylindrical flat fondants or other shapes.
    • Now proceed with the usual steps to arrange the head, body and other parts to complete the Hello Kitty.
  1. 1
Hello Kitty in Kimono: To do these follow the following procedure.
    • This method is similar to Frocks method except for the hands part where in one needs to cut circular fondants from a fondant cutter of diameter 4 centimeter (1.6 in) and will be directly placed on the hand just like we did with the frock on the body. Apply a little glue at one end of the hand and place the circular fondant shape on it to get attached to that end. Now use toothpicks and glue to attach the hands to the body where body is already attached with the frock. Add details to kimono by painting it and adding a thin strip of fondant as ribbon belt.
    • To accessorize kimono you can also add a Japanese fan by using fondant and florist wire.

Method 2
Special Hello Kitty Themes

Christmas Hello Kitty

  1. 1
Create a small fondant cone of red color (or green/pink color) for the Christmas cap. Slightly twist the cone and add a small curly white fondant ball at the end of the narrow part of the cap. Make curly strip of white fondant and stick it around the boundary of the cap to complete the Christmas cap. Now attach the Christmas cap to the head by using edible glue and toothpicks.
  2. 2
Decorate the bow with thin flat strips of green fondant on the red form alternate green and red fondant colors. Add a thin strip of red or green fondant as scarf around the neck of Hello Kitty. Cover the ending strips of the scarf with small white fondant balls by using edible glue. You can also use alternate red and green fondant strips to beautify your Hello Kitty’s scarf.
  3. 3
Cover the whole body with a rectangular sheet of red fondant and stick small white fondant buttons along the jacket. Add curly fondant strips to the ends of the jacket. Similarly use red rectangular fondant strips to cover the hand and at the end attach a white fondant button along with some curly fondant strips at the end of the jacket’s hand part. This completes the wardrobe for Christmas Hello Kitty.
  4. 4
Replace shoes with snow boots by creating black or red color snow boot with ends covered with curly white fondants.
  5. 5
For accessorizing add a gift box made up of red fondant and covered in thin strips of green fondant as ribbons. Hang the box in hands by using florist wire and make sure that it’s not visible. You can also add a candy can or a Christmas garland and other various Christmas accessories to Christmas Hello Kitty by using fondant and florist wire.

Angel Hello Kitty

  1. 1
Replace the bow of Hello Kitty with several flower shaped fondants of various bright colors.
  2. 2
Add a fairy magic stick with a star shaped fondant at its end. Use florist wire to create the stick and cover the stick with paint to accessorize the magic stick.
  3. 3
Now make two F or E shaped fondants of blue or pink color with a slight inclination of 30° to make it look like a wing. Make the ends of the F or E shaped fondant circular and attach them at the back of Hello Kitty by using glue to form wings of the Angel Hello Kitty.
  4. 4
Add food sparkles to the star, the dress and the wings to make her look like an angel. Attach thin strips of fondant as ribbon to the dress of Hello Kitty. You can also replace the magic stick with a snowflake magic stick or flowers.
  5. 5
You can also add a crown made up of fondant to your Hello Kitty and a bunch of twisted strips of fondant around the hands and dress to complete the Angel theme of Hello Kitty.

Halloween Hello Kitty

  1. 1
For the dress code use a kimono dress code for your Hello kitty and decorate and paint it with black and dark colors such as red.
  2. 2
For cap use a Christmas cap of black color and decorate it with yellow colored star shaped flat fondants. And replace the white ball of Christmas cap with a yellow colored fondant ball.
  3. 3
Use a broom stick as a Halloween accessory for the Hello Kitty to complete the Halloween theme.

Method 3

  1. 1
You can use Hello Kitty figurines as cake toppers along with various other figurine recipes such as a Santa Berry on a cake to make the presentation beautiful.
  2. 2
You can also use Hello Kitty figurines to create a complete Hello Kitty party by creating a creative presentation of it along with other Hello Kitty recipes such as Hello Kitty cakes, Hello Kitty cupcakes, Hello Kitty pops, Hello Kitty cookies, etc.
  3. 3
Hello Kitty's head is quite unique and can also be used for making Hello Kitty pops or for creative frosting decorations on a cupcake. People often use frosting to add body to the Hello Kitty's head to avoid any additional works required in making a body, shoes, hands and other accessories. Most of all it bypasses the toothpick usage in Hello Kitty figurine.

  • Use a knife or any sharp edged tool to lift the fondants after rolling them to avoid getting them deformed due to stickiness. After lifting you can use your hands to life it normally.
  • An alternate way of making colored fondant would be to poke the fondant ball with a toothpick and then using toothpick as a color transfer agent by dipping them into food coloring and inserting them into previously made holes. Similarly make several such holes and then knead the fondant ball to get rid of colored streaks and make them uniformly colored. However one has to use a glove if they don't want their hands to look colored for the rest of the day.
  • As you start working on Hello Kitty we recommend having a photo of Hello Kitty to make things easier while adding details and deciding on what size each body part should be like.
  • Gloves though optional will save your hands from getting colored and will also make sure to have a proper hygiene.
  • If the fondant becomes too soft or sticky then use a little amount of powdered sugar to make it right.
  • If your colored fondants are too much dark then use a little more amount of white fondant to lighten the color. However the best practice would be to use a little amount of food coloring at first and if the color is not dark enough then use a little more of food coloring to get desired color.
  • To paint use a little amount of vodka or alcohol with food coloring's and mix them together to make them suitable for painting.
  • Whenever you are attaching fondants make sure to apply edible glue and for heavier attachments use both toothpicks and the glue.
  • Always work on a powdered mat (using powdered sugar) to avoid fondant from sticking to the surface. In case you are not using gloves, use powdered sugar on your hands to avoid fondant sticking to your hands.
  • Keep practicing with fondants and create new themes to innovate new recipes and presentations.

  • Be wary of the toothpicks while eating.
  • Fondant dries out quickly so keep it covered or wrapped in a plastic wrap and stored in a plastic bag when not in use or being used.
  • Fondant picks up dirt and other foreign material very quickly so make sure your hands are clean when handling and avoid wearing fuzzy sweaters while working with fondants.
