How to Make Bitter Melon (Karela) Sabji

Bitter Melon is a good for our health. It contains potassium, carbohydrates, fiber and is rich in vitamins A, B-6, calcium and magnesium. Because of the bitter taste, most people don't like it. This is a recipe that can make Bitter Melon a regular menu item.

Steps

    Use about 2 bitter melon per person.

    Wash then clean them. Peel and seed them. Remove as much of the outer green skin as you can because that is what makes them bitter.

    Cut them making round small slices, or you can make it as small cubes. It depends on you.

    Fill a pot with enough water to cover the melon pieces. Add one tablespoon of salt to the water, which will remove the remaining bitterness. Leave them to soak for 15-20 minutes.

    Now heat a pan with one tablespoon of oil and add one teaspoon of mustard. you will hear little pops as the mustard seeds rupture. Then add cumin, asafoetida (Vandevi) and one teaspoon of red pepper.

    Now add the Bitter Melon slices to the oil. Mix them well. Cover with a lid for 4-5 minutes.

    Add 1.5 tablespoon of Groundnut powder in it. Mix well.

    Cover it with a lid for 9-10 minute. Keep on checking whether it becomes soft or not. When the slices will be soft. It's ready to serve

  • At last when it is covered with lid keep on checking otherwise it will get over cooked.
