How to Make Jelly Marbles

Jelly marbles are transparent spheres that absorb up to 300 mL of water. They are fun to play with, (just be careful not to break them, you cannot fix them) or you can put them in a vase with flowers and the flowers will stay hydrated. If you do not want to make them, a packet of them from amazon costs about six dollars.

  1. 1
Put a pinch of baking soda into a clear glass.
  2. 2
Add a small splash of vinegar as well.
  3. 3
Stir really well until the mixture becomes completely transparent.
  4. 4
Gradually add small amounts of baking soda and vinegar until you get a little bit of sodium acetate (looks like rock salt) and dissolve.
  5. 5
Put the mixture in the freezer for 10 minutes.
  6. 6
Pour sodium bicarbonate about 1/4 of the way up a 16 ounce glass.
  7. 7
Take the sodium acetate out of the freezer and add it to the glass of calcium bicarbonate (this will foam up so do it over a sink).
  8. 8
    Mix it really well.
  9. 9
Add exactly 1/2 a cup of iodized salt to the mixture.
  10. 10
    Mix well.
  11. 11
Add everything to a pot and boil it for seven minutes while still mixing.
  12. 12
Pour the mixture into a storage container and let it cool for an hour at the least.
  13. 13
You use them by leaving them in water for about eight hours. Now you can play with them, leave them in a vase with flowers, etc.

  • You can colour them using food colouring while boiling the mixture.

  • Use rubber gloves while doing this.
  • Do not eat the jelly marbles or consume in any way.
