How to Make Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting

This recipe produces a refreshing and delicious lemon flavored cream cheese frosting. It's ideal for using on citrus flavored cakes, cupcakes and other baked goods.


  • 240g/8 oz/1 1/2 cups icing/powdered sugar
  • 90g/3 oz/ 1/3 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 45g/1 1/2 oz/3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (essence)
  • Juice and zest of 1 lemon, fresh

    Put the icing sugar, cream and butter into a mixing bowl. Mix well to combine.

    Add the vanilla extract, lemon juice and rind. Mix well for 5-10 minutes. The cream cheese frosting is ready when it's light and fluffy.
    • If using an electric mixer, mix at top speed for 5 minutes.

    Spread on the cake or other baked good as required. Use a frosting palette knife or a butter knife to distribute the frosting across the top of the cake evenly.


  • It is possible to substitute bottled lemon juice but fresh is always nicer.
  • If you don't wish to use the frosting straight away, keep covered in the refrigerator for a few hours before using.
