How to Make Moong Dal Cheela

Moong dal cheela is also known as green gram pancakes. This article will show you the vegan recipe for moong dal cheela. This can be served as breakfast or or for a snack. It's healthy and delicious!


Moong Dal Cheela

  • 2 cup Moong Dal
  • 1 cup rice
  • Grated ginger- quantity to taste
  • 1tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 2 green chilli finely chopped
  • 1/8 tsp Asafoetida (or to taste)

Green Chutney

  • 2 cup chopped cilantro (Chinese parsley aka coriander)
  • 2-3 green chillies
  • Cumin seeds
  • 1 tbs salt (or to taste)

Part 1
Making Moong Dal Cheela

    Soak moong dal (green gram) and rice in lukewarm water for 4-5 hours.

    Grind it and add water if necessary to grind it to paste.
  3. 3
    Add grated ginger, chopped green chilli, salt and asafoetida (hing).

    Heat a non-stick pan.Once it is uniformly heated, pour the batter using a serving spoon and spread it evenly in a round shape (just like dosa or pancake).

    Cook on medium heat until the underside is done.

    Carefully flip over and cook until the other side is done too.

    Fold the cheela over to a half moon shape. Serve hot.

Part 2
Making Green Chutney

    Rinse the coriander leaves well in water and roughly chop them.
  2. 2
    Add chopped leaves, green chillies, salt and cumin seeds in blender jar and grind it. Do not add water else the chutney will be too watery.

    Remove the chutney in a bowl and keep aside. Serve it with hot moong dal cheela.


  • If you are using brown rice, soak it overnight.
  • If you don't have a non-stick pan, you can use some olive oil and spread over the pan before pouring the batter.
