How to Make Orange Icing

Orange icing is a real treat atop cupcakes and large cakes. It jazzes up a basic sponge and it combines well with such flavours as chocolate and rose.


  • 100g (or just under half a cup) butter or dairy-free, trans-fat free margarine
  • 2 teaspoons grated orange rind
  • 2 cups icing sugar, sifted
  • 1 - 2 tbsp orange juice (freshly squeezed is best)
  • Yellow and red food colouring drops for orange hue (optional)

    Cream the butter or margarine in mixing bowl. Using an electric mixer or whisk, quickly whip the butter or margarine until it turns light and fluffy.

    Add the orange rind and mix through.

    Beat in the icing sugar (powdered sugar) gradually. Add half of the powdered sugar, mix, and then add the other half. Keep beating until the resulting mixture becomes smooth.

    Add the orange juice. Only add small amounts until the icing becomes of a spreadable consistency. Adding too much juice will result in runny icing. It is always better to add less than too much.

    Add the coloring if desired. This step is optional. If you are decorating cupcakes or birthday cake, you may consider adding food coloring to give the cake a pop of color.

    Frost your dessert. Spread your freshly made frosting on cake, cupcakes, or on biscuits (cookies). This same recipe can be used to make a lemon frosting as well with lemon rind and lemon juice in place of orange.


  • Icing sugar once made up does not keep for long and is best applied when made. If you are interrupted, quickly place a cover it, pop into the fridge and return to it as soon as possible. It is likely that it will require a little more liquid to remove the dried stiffness that will have occurred during refrigeration.
