How to Make Pakistani Pulao (Chicken and Rice Dish)

This mouthwatering recipe is an instant complete meal that can be use as a lunch and dinner!


  • 1 pound chicken drumsticks
  • 1 cup basmati rice, soaked in water for 15 minutes
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp garlic (peeled and chopped)
  • 1 tsp ginger (coarsely chopped)
  • Garam Masala (spice powder, 1 tsp, or to taste)
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 4 Tbsp cooking oil
  • Salt
  • Red chilli powder (1 pinch, or to taste - optional)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp fresh green coriander leaves (thoroughly washed and crushed)
  • Half tsp green chillies (washed and crushed, optional)

    Heat the oil on medium flame. Fry the medium onion until golden brown.

    Add one pound chicken drum sticks and salt. Fry them until golden brown.

    Add garlic and ginger with onion and chicken. Fry for 2 minutes.

    Add the garam masala and red chilli powder. Fry for 1 minute.

    Pour water into the chicken mixture and cook it on medium heat for about 20 minutes (or when the water dries out completely). Then stir rice very gently.

    Garnish it with coriander leaves and green chillies.

    Serve it with yogurt or your favourite sauce.


  • For the best result please buy basmati rice only, and do not let the rice over cooked!
