How to Make Shoulder Pads

Shoulder pads were one of the fashion statements of 80's clothing, and were forgotten for awhile, but they may be hitting the fashion runways in the coming fashion seasons. If you want to make your shoulder pads, the project is not that difficult.

Steps

    Cut four pieces of batting in the shape of an arch. Imagine the pad shaped as a "D" and you will be able to cut the pattern out. You can have a friend measure the curve of your shoulder area or make a guesstimate. The shoulder pad shown at Burda.com is 5 12 inches (14.0 cm) by 4 inches (10.2 cm).

    Make two darts on the curved edge. The first dart should be 1/4-inches while the second dart should be 1/2-inches..

    Sew the darts using your sewing machine Do this for both pads.

    Cut a piece of lining fabric approximately 1-inch larger than the pads.

    Fold the lining fabric over the pad so that the fabric encloses the pads.

    Pin the edges of the pads. Make sure the pin heads are facing towards the inner part of the pads.

    Sew around the curved edge carefully removing the pins as you sew.

    Trim off the excess fabric.

Tips

  • For a neater finish use a serger. Serged shoulder pad seams do not need to be trimmed either.

Warnings

  • Be sure to remove the pins while sewing to prevent breaking the sewing machine needle.
  • Use care when using the sewing machine.
