How to Make Spicy Onion and Coconut Chutney

Spicy onion and coconut chutney is a delicious South Indian side dish. It goes well with Indian breads, pizza, rice, and other such dishes. It can even be added to a sandwich for flavor.


  • 1/2 kg large onions
  • 10 dry chilies
  • Salt, as required
  • 1/2 a coconut
  • 100ml oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 10 curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon tamarind paste

Part 1
Preparing the Ingredients

    Slice the onions and set the slices aside on a plate.

    Cut the dry chilies into two half.
  3. 3
    Chop the coconut into small pieces.

Part 2
Cooking the Ingredients

    Place the saucepan on the stove. Pour 50 ml of oil into the saucepan.

    Heat the saucepan gently. Cook over a medium flame or heat.
  3. 3
    Add the sliced onions to the saucepan. Add the dry chilies into the saucepan.

    Stir the ingredients until the dish becomes light brown.

    Add the sliced coconut to saucepan. Stir it, then add tamarind paste to the saucepan.

    Add salt for taste to the mixture.

    Remove from the heat. Leave to cool for some time.
    • It can be cooled under a fan if you have one over the stove.

Part 3
Making the Chutney

    Put the mixture into the blender. Blend to turn it into a paste-like texture.

    Take another pan. Add 50 ml oil and heat the oil gently.

    Add the mustard seeds into the oil. Then add the curry leaves. Add this cooked mixture to the chutney. Stir through.

    Taste the chutney to see what it tastes like. If it needs more salt, add some.

    Serve. Transfer the chutney to a dish. Place out for serving with dinner. This chutney goes well with idli, dosa, burger, pizza, cutlets, bread, etc.
