How to Make Your Own Deodorant Spray

Looking for deodorant that's cheap and doesn't have harsh chemicals? This safe deodorant recipe uses ingredients you can find in your kitchen, is extremely easy to make, and it really works!


Basic Spray:

  • Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda); do not confuse it with baking powder!
  • Water - distilled, filtered, or rainwater are the best choices to avoid adding more chemicals to your body
  • Lavender oil (optional)

Witch Hazel Spray:

  • 1/2 cup witch hazel
  • 1/4 cup aloe vera gel (or juice)
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 10 drops essential oil

Method 1
Basic Spray

    Fill the spray bottle about halfway with water.

    Mix in about an eighth of a teaspoonful of baking soda. Mix thoroughly.

    Keep adding small amounts of baking soda. You will want the mixture to turn moist and paste-like with a texture that is both slippery and smooth. The amount you end up using will depend on the type of water used and the size of your bottle. Some water types remove the "slimy" feel and so you'll need to add more.[1]

    Add a drop of essential lavender oil, if you want. You may wish to use a different type of essential oil; that's fine but be sure to know the properties of the oil and the safety for applying to your skin and for any medical conditions you might have.

    Shake the bottle gently to mix all the ingredients together. It should feel slippery and it needs to be totally dissolved because any grainy particles will chafe the skin and irritate it during the day.[2] Once the mixture meets these requirements, the deodorant is ready to apply.

    Spray the homemade deodorant on your underarms. Do not rinse, but simply gently massage underarm so that the skin will absorb the deodorant faster, and to enable it to spread to your entire underarm.

Method 2
Witch Hazel Spray

    Add the witch hazel and aloe vera together into a small spray bottle.

    Add the baking soda. Shake well to combine.

    Add the drops of essential oil. This step is optional; always know the properties of the oil before using on your body, as some oils can aggravate the skin and others are not suitable for use in this way.

    Use as required. Shake the bottle before each use.
    • Top ups during the day are helpful, especially if it's very hot or you're very sweaty.


  • If your deodorant is too watery, and it doesn't feel slippery, just add a bit more baking soda. If it feels grainy, add more water. Don't forget to shake the bottle.
  • This deodorant can usually last through a day, depending on your activities. You may need to use more or less; if you're sporty, throw the bottle into your carry bag and re-spritz as needed.
  • If the deodorant isn't working well or you are going to have a very, very active day, try adding a bit more baking soda and rubbing it in gently after you apply. It's a good idea to keep a container of baking soda in your bathroom for this. Whenever you need it, just dab with your fingers.
  • If you get any white stains from applying too much, relax: just rinse out with water; the baking soda is not harmful to the clothing.


  • Use only as much as you need! Too much baking soda may cause irritation or stains. You should start out with a bit to use and increase the amount of deodorant you use if necessary.
  • If you experience any reactions, stop immediately. Either speak to your doctor or a dermatologist about a possible sensitivity or allergy to baking soda.
