How to Occupy Your Time when You're Sick

Are you sick but you're alert enough to want to find something to do that will occupy your time without straining you? This article provides some suggestions for helping you to remain occupied until you get well again.

    Call up a friend and chat. Ask your friend what they're doing and if they'd like to come and visit you.

    Call a work colleague and get the rundown on what is happening at work. If you're well enough, ask you boss to send home some easy work items to work through at your pace (nothing time sensitive!).

    Enjoy water. If you can get out of bed and use water, have a long bath now and then, bubbles and all. Take a short swim if your illness permits. You don't have to do anything strenuous; just enjoy floating and bobbing about.

    Ask someone to go to the library for you and bring home some new bestsellers or other interesting books. If you're really daring, let them make the choices and expand your horizons!

    Listen to music. Try music you don't know much about and learn some new lyrics.

    Organize your computer. Being ill is a good time to get the mess off your computer. Make sure that songs have album art and names, and sort documents into folders.

    Plan a trip. Look on a website like Expedia for flights and hotels, and look at tourist websites for museums and shows. Make a full itinerary of what you would want to do. Maybe some day you'll actually get to go on this trip.

    Watch a hilarious movie. When you laugh, it will help you feel better.

    Go for a gentle walk and observe how different people are and how they behave.


  • Be careful not to overdo it. Sometimes when you're sick, you just need rest.
  • If you go on the computer, watch television or play video games, make sure you don't go on them too long because excessive use can/will strain your eyes.


  • If you're feeling or have been feeling faint, weak or dizzy, do not have a bath or swim. You could drown if you fainted, blacked out or collapsed in the water!
  • If you do have homework, be sure you don't procrastinate too long unless you're truly feeling terrible. You don't want to go back to school with nothing to do except homework!
  • Do not sit idle and think of any negative thoughts or fears or deadlines. Rather, plan how you can solve the problems.
  • Don't invite your friends over if your illness might be contagious.
