How to Partition HDD Using Disk Utilities

In this tutorial you will learn and understand how to separate your data using multiple partitions. This will allow you to make changes to the operating system partition. Such benefits include re-installing and re-configuring the OS without losing and backing up data. This tutorial separates itself from the others because it identifies the correct partition format for the multiple functions regarding DJ’ing.

Steps

    Enter the Boot Menu by holding down the "Option Key" during start-up.

    Insert Mac installation disk or a USB with OS X installation files.

    Select the Mac OS X USB drive or DVD.

    When the USB or DVD loads, select Disk Utility.

    On the left, select the hard drive you would like to partition. After selecting the hard drive, select Partition located on the right.

    Delete any existing partitions. Highlight the partition(s) and select (-) to delete partition.

    Click on Current to choose the number of partitions.

    A minimum of 2 partitions must be selected.

    Select Untitled 1. Under Partition Information; Name: (Name of choice),Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Size: (Size of choice)

    Select Untitled 2. Under Partition Information; Name: (Name of choice), Format: MS-DOS (Fat), Size:(Size of choice)

    Select apply.

    Click on the Apple icon at the top and click on restart.

Tips

  • Three partitions are needed if BootCamp is required. The BootCamp partition should be the last partition and formatted as free space.

Warnings

  • Backup your computer before proceeding with this tutorial.
