How to Search an iPad

Two Methods:iOS 7 and AboveiOS 6 and Under

The iPad's Spotlight search is a feature that allows you to search Apps, Contacts, Mail, Calendars, and more. This feature becomes extremely useful when dealing with a device with lots of folders, or a device that you do not own.

Method 1
iOS 7 and Above

    Swipe your finger across your iPad’s Home screen downwards.

    Tap the field at the top of the screen and type your search.

    Swipe a finger up the screen to view all search results organized by contacts, apps, e-mails, messages, and reminders as well as music, video and podcasts. Tap any of the results view the item.

    Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Search Web or Search Wikipedia to view results from the Internet.

Method 2
iOS 6 and Under

  1. 1
    Navigate to the first page of your home screen. By default, this screen is left untouched by apps you download, and houses only the pre-installed Apple apps.
  2. 2
    Now, swipe to the right, as if you were going to a home screen a page before this one.
    • Alternatively, you may also push the home button on the first page to get to Spotlight.
  3. 3
    Search away! You can find nearly anything in the iOS spotlight search. You can adjust what is searchable in Settings -> General -> Spotlight Search.


  • A Top Hit will be shown at the top of the search results showing the most relevant search result.
  • Under the General section of the Settings app you can tap Spotlight Search and select which categories are searched and edit the order they appear in results.
