How to Sign Up and Prepare For the Encounters with Canada Program

Encounters with Canada is a youth forum in Ottawa. Each week, 120-150 young men and women from across Canada travel to Ottawa to take part in the program. If the program interests you, and you are wondering how to sign up, and what to do after you sign up, then this article is for you.

  1. 1
Talk to your school principal or regional coordinator about obtaining an access code. You will need this to register.
  2. 2
Go to the Encounters with Canada website ( and register once you have your code.
    • Create an account, fill out the required information sections and wait for an email confirming your registration.
  3. 3
Wait for a response. About 3-4 weeks later, you will receive an email letting you know when you get to go to Ottawa, as well as an email containing your travel documents (you will receive two emails).
    • If you don't receive your travel documents one week before you are supposed to be in Ottawa, contact Encounters with Canada.
  4. 4
Start your trip. On the day you travel (it could be a Saturday or a Sunday), be sure to show up at the airport or train/bus station early. You don't want to miss your scheduled departure!
    • If you have connections, make sure instead of goofing off, you get to your next bus/train/plane.
  5. 5
Find the Encounters with Canada representative once you arrive in Ottawa. They will take you to the centre you will be staying at for the next week.
  6. 6
Get to know your fellow participants. If you travelled on the Saturday, Sunday will be a free day to meet some of the other participants, sleep (and get used to the time change, if you have one), or do some homework while you wait for the other participants to arrive.
  7. 7
    Enjoy your time in Ottawa!

  • Make sure you don't forget anything at home!
  • Be on time for all travel.

  • Make sure you behave and don't break any rules/laws, as you will be sent home (at your expense!), or turned over to the police!
  • Ensure you don't attempt to bring anything you are not allowed on the plane, such as weapons, too much liquid, etc.
