Hey! Quick question on your latest article, Grow Citrus Fruits. On step 11, second bullet, the sentence seems to be cut off. Do you by any chance remember what it was supposed to say? If I knew anything about citrus trees, I'd fill it in myself, but your knowledge of this is better than mine so I figured I'd ask you first. Thanks!

Hi Dvortygirl, I loved your article "Make Chainmail", that was really interesting. I noticed, however, that in step 15 the picture doesn't look quite right. The blue ring in the bottom right is actually interlocking 5 rings, not 4. It should be above the blue ring above it, not interlocking it, shouldn't it?

Other than that, though, great work! Thanks!

You've been adding images to many, many pages, both yours and those begun by others, and in doing so have nurtured many featured how-to articles that show thousands of readers that wikiHow can be an amazing resource. Your high-quality, detailed and helpful photographs make a world of difference and are deeply appreciated. They help articles meet the ultimate goal: being the single most accurate, most helpful, highest quality page on that topic available anywhere.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking of rewriting our deletion policy to make it more clear. Are you good at making wiki tables? I am clueless about it. I'm imaging we could take this:

http://www.wikihow.com/User:JackHerrick/Deletion-Consensus-Attempt-2

And have everything in one easier to understand table that would sort of be

  • Reason - NFD Shortcut - Explanation - Example Deletes - Example Keeps

So for example one might looks like

  • Sexually explicit or sexually charged material - sex - Articles focused on sex, whether explicitly worded or not - "How to Have Sex", "How to Plan a Threesome" - "How to Kiss", How to French Kiss

Any clue how to build a table like this? Any clue if this is a good idea in the first place?

Hi, Dv, I looked at "fix a vaccuum cleaner" and it looked like you did an incredibly thorough job. I would always lubricate the bearings on the brush roller when it is serviced, and changing the brushes has changed since the 70's and 80's, since some newer models have thermoplastic brush assemblies. The biggest single dianostic tool for working on vaccuums is the performance, whether or not it seems to be cleaning well, and the single biggest problem is usually the suction side, either a plugged hose, connecting tube, or overfilled filter. You might warn the reader not to puncture the suction tube if they use a clothes hanger to try to clear it, and pushing debris with a broom handle may only pack the obstruction so tightly it will be impossible to move. Something else the reader may want to notice is odor. A slipping drive belt has a distinct odor (LOL)! Any odor of burning or overheated plastic is an immediate indicator the unit should be checked. One other point, many office supply stores sell a magnetic bar that goes across the front lower edge of the cleaner to pluck up metal objects like paper clips and paper staples. These will also pick up bobby pins, hair pins, straight pins, safety pins...you hit the nail on the head, these objects can foul the blower fan and either rip the fins to pieces or burn up the motor in seconds. The noise you described are not particularly accurate. Bearings more tend to create a high pitched whine in my experience, but the main thing is being familiar with the sound of each individual vaccuum, and noticing unusual noises of any type. Anyway, these are just some off the top of my head thoughts, hope they help. Bob

Thank you! I'm so glad you like the idea!

I loved those Papasan chairs when they were popular back in the 70's... but hated the fact that I couldn't get a "new" cushion for one for under $80 bucks. (gulp!)

When I saw the frame at a thrift store for $7.00... the idea to just throw pillows on it morphed into making a "new" cushion from old bed pillows that were stacked in my closets, and the result was the FA.

I solved the problem of cleaning the cushion by creating a washable slip cover. See Make a Slipcover for Your Papasan Chair Cushion for instructions. This "could" work to cover a ratty or torn existing cushion if need be.

Meanwhile, I had a LOT of fun, and my teenage son's respect for my sewing abilities has skyrocketed... he's begging me to give the chair to him for his room. <grin>

Thank you for taking the time to communicate with me and explain your reasoning behind that incident of this morning.

I know that you meant no harm, because you are a very fine person, and I have been quite impressed with your ourstanding contributions to wikiHow as well as your friendly demeanor.

Perhaps I overreacted, but then again, when I read you describing what it is that we need in the knitting category, and with me, knowing full well, that I had spent long hours fully and carefully completing what went into that category, I felt that maybe all my work meant nothing, and was not recognized as it was.....A complete Knitting Category,' that began with How to Knit, and ran the gamut until it ended with patterns creating a Scarf, or a Pie.

And to top it all off, each article was made even more difficult, because each was a pictorial..'}

However, let us put this behind us, and move on. I accept your explanation, and appreciate your taking the time to offer it.

All of us here, work together for only one purpose, and that is for the good of wikiHow, but this site has also caused me to befriend some really remarkable people, and I place you high in the list.

You are correct, there are somethings that cannot be references, and those do not have to be..exactly.

But on other things, he does want referencing so as to make the article accurate.

I did not mean to imply that everything had to be referenced, but he has given me a long list of inaccurate articles that I have been making accurate.

Recipes do not need referencing, and such articles like that.

But I just wanted him to aware of the fact, that we are going to require referencing...he thought that nothing here needed referencing..;)..I was trying to help.

Please feel free to answer anything in hobbies and crafts that catches your eye... I trust your excellent good sense and writing abilities. If you'll tell me what your writing interests are, I'll keep an eye out for good ones that you might want first crack at...?

Loiswade42Lois Wade said:

I've not started an article yet... kinda on purpose... waiting for inspiration to strike. I've taken pictures of "needed supplies" which includes 12 shades of felt, two ziplocs of buttons, hot glue, scissors, McCalls and Butterick patterns for tree ornaments, and some cookie cutters... so it's "all in there".

I also checked the current articles... one that says "button ornaments" is actually VERY close to the idea we have, except for the buttons. And we need to think of a good title... one that is unique, yet not cumbersome. I'll sleep on it tonight and see what pops out in the morning.

What do you say to the idea of us BOTH doing ornaments for this? I will only be able to get in one ornament a day... after work... this week... so if you have a "favorite" shape you'd like to make for your tree, just let me know what it is and I'll direct my energies to some other shape?

You've just sparked another idea too... I've made a heart garland for my tree... had it for 10 years or so... Made from red and white scrap materials... I can show how the hearts were made and then post pictures of my tree with the finished garland on it... Thanks! I need to hang out with you more! You're a good ideas person.

Good point. I've got the fabric and materials on hand... but I'm short of time until the weekend... We should get together! (laughter) <sigh> You know how it is, I'm sure.

Go right ahead. I'm sure that anything you add will be excellent.

I'm trying to come up with a way to display a lot of alternatives... you know... lots of the different finished products... so that folks get the idea of how versatile this really is. Do you know a way to line up multiple pictures across the page? Tile them? Listing them down the left or right side of the page takes up so much vertical space...

Maybe I can just do a lot of them and hang them together and take one picture...

Hey! I actually read Cradle to Cradle several years ago and it definitely made a positive dent in my brain. However, it did yield a few heated discussions when I tried to share my discovery that what we call recycling isn't really going to solve any problems--people get very defensive about recycling! I have no idea how to wrap any of the concepts up into a how-to, though; I'm still trying to figure out how to package the ideas behind regenerative agriculture into wikiHow format! =)

No. Winding a bobbin is plenty, I think. Raising the thread is nice, but not necessary... even though I personally think that it is an integral part of doing a bobbin, not everyone would agree.

We couldn't really write a separate article about just raising the thread... so let's leave it with the bobbin. I think the title is fine. The shorter, more concise version will be easier to find anyway.

You've done an amazing job with that article! I remember it's somewhat stubby beginnings... and you've fleshed it out nicely! I noticed two minor (spell check didn't get them) spelling problems, but other than that, it looks good! Excellent work! Thanks!

I'll see what I can do about the buttonhole article dearth.

I never sew them by machine myself... but the attachment looks remarkably like a "C" that presses down on the button to hold it in place. Then you set the stitch length to zero and the zigzag width to equal the distance between the button holes. Too scarey for me... I'd be concerned about breaking needles that way.

But button holes is another thing. There's even a nice "button hole" stitch when you do it by hand... and my machine makes doing them as easy as 1...2...3...

I won't get to it until this evening, but I'll see what I can whip up then. Thanks for the head's up!

Hey! Thanks for all the help with the Foundation Piecing article! I'm glad you could understand it... and pleased that you liked it enough to FAC it.

I struggled with this idea for a longish time before finally figuring it out... I didn't have anyone to show me... just books with written instructions that didn't make sense. I finally came across a hand sketched explanation for a six piece block done in foundation piecing... and the light bulb went on. Hopefully, this will help a lot of other beginning quilters avoid the frustration I had.

Ps. Hubby likes the quilt pattern you drew. It will likely be my next major project.. whenever THIS one is done... What do you think of an entirely blue one? With the differences made completely in the gradiations of blue and purple cloth? It's only five colors...

Green - Darkest blue

Red - Medium Blue

Yellow - Pale Blue

Blue - Medium Purple

Purple - Dark Purple

Possibly the red squares in the "middle" could be a Pale Purple instead of Medium Blue.

WDYT?

At 19:27, Feb 24, 2008

The blocks are set diagonally with half blocks (triangles) around the edges. That's the most logical way to make them for this pattern. Gimme a few days to sketch out the three block patterns. Hello. I leaving you a message because I need your help in guiding my focus for future articles and contests. I created an extremely brief software survey on the forums: located here. If you're willing and have a few seconds to spare, please help by filling out the survey. I am sending this to our most active editors according to stats.wikihow.com.

With enough submissions, this will hopefully help the entire community as well! Thanks.

I agree with you about the thermometer. The old-fashioned glass thermometer used to be cheap and readily available. I used them when my kids were young (over 20 years ago) but I had to write with what is being currently advised. Hopefully, someone can add more information about different types of thermometers to use. The ear thermometer is expensive and the plastic strip model is not very reliable.

Thank you for the UNICEF nomination I feel so honored,

This is how you do that method (it is just to complicted to write on that subject because it is a bridge between compleating the square and the quadratic forumla)

ax2+bx+c=0

x2+b/a+c/a=0 (divide by a :first step of completing the square)

x2+b/a+(b/2a)2= -c/2a + b2/4a2 (subtract c/2a from both sides and add (b/2a)2 to both sides)

(x+b/2a)2=b2-2ac/4a2(simplify both sides)

x+b/2a=+ or -√b2-4ac/(2a) (take the square root of both sides)

x= -b + or - √b2-4ac/(2a) (subtract both sides by b/2a)

KrystleKrystle said:

Hey Betsy, I have a question about Balance a Checkbook. In one of the tips you wrote "If you have two or more people making payments from the same account". I filled in the second half of the sentence as follows: "...touch base with each other as often as possible so you can each record the payments in your individual checkbooks." I'm not sure if that's what you had in mind, and I've never balanced a checkbook on a shared account, so I might be missing a better solution here.

Reading this article reminded me to publish one that's been sitting in a wordpad file on my laptop for several months now: Manage Finances As a Couple

Very nice article. I did some minor fixes, but may have lost part of your meaning when I knocked out what might have been a duplicative sentence (in the hand washing area). So you'll probably want to take a look at my edit.

Maybe someone would beef up the first article you link to if you were to put a call out to the Collaboration Corner. How to Sit in a Chair is currently under NFD for "Sarcastic. A how-to manual is not the place for sarcasm" possibly because of its use of words like buttox (sic) and congratz (sic).

I am not sure how I can help with the OLPC and UNICEF stuff since I have never had any exposure to either, but otherwise would be glad to help. Again, nice job and a useful addition to wikiHow.

Hiya, Dvortygirl!

I noticed the little edit situation between C725 and WorldWideWeb and the post you left on Alex's talkpage. FYI, the edit that Mimi did is actually inaccurate, in Dry Cell Batteries- this term is practically archaic, Live and Dead electricity, using masking tape (????) to fasten conductors? and assembling the magnet by the photo does not show any windings as described by the steps, and doesn't produce a magnetic flux, just a dead short which could cause an alkalai battery to explode, so my suggestion would be to revert WWW's edits. I left a message on WorldWideWeb's talkpage similar to the one you left on C725's page.

Hope I didn't overstep what should have been done.

I have no clue how I bumped into the wikihow on drawing a straight line and ended up in the tongue-in-cheek ruler exposition. It's like back tracking a conversation with seven people; tangents can be impossible to reconstruct. Your plea, however, on how to draw a straight line freehand is something I can actually address. In the current days of CAD, drafting with pencil and paper is becoming a lost art. I'm old enough to have been trained in technical drawing with, you got it, pencil and paper.

As with all hand eye skills, coordination comes with practice. Place your pencil to paper at the starting point. Now, avoid the mistake most make by not watching your pencil point as it moves across the paper to its destination. The secret is to focus on the destination point, drawing the line without looking at the pencil. It helps if the motion is quicker as an agonizing pace dooms the line. Try not to anchor your wrist or arm to the drawing surface. Any body part that touches becomes a center point for the arc and will curve your line.

If you start with shorter lines and work your way up, eventually you can draw an amazingly straight line from corner to diagonal corner on letter size paper and beyond, effortlessly.

I used to get kidded a lot by peers who would doodle elaborate sketches during boring meetings and there I was drawing straight lines. Apparently, even non-thinking doodle time can contribute to your skill set.

Hi, Dvortygirl!

Great article on Elderly Drivers! Mom is 87, and she drove safely until she was 84, the Driver's License people wouldn't renew hers, although she didn't have typical vision problems, etc, and is in good health. We live on a farm about 12 mile from town, so someone has to pick up her Lotto tickets and meds, but it hasn't been too bad. The great thing about living in (outside of) a small town is the neighborly attitude of the people. I stay in a motel 4 nights a week, but someone does the chauffering any time Mom needs a ride. We keep the insurance on her truck for this purpose, so it doesn't cost anyone anything but their time. The biggest problem we had was a serious (I mean SERIOUS) bout with depression when she was unsure if she was losing all of her mobility.

Well, this was just a note of thanks...THANKS!

If you can't convince them to not drive, see if they will drive only during specific conditions that are safe and important to them. I can tell you when my dad quite driving he lost a lot of reasons to keep living, so way the harm against the benefit, and see if you can at least reduce the frequency of trips.

Good Luck

Thanks for cleaning up the gelatin article. I was really tired yesterday, starting to feel old (ACCCK) as my day started with a trip to the laundromat. The Maytag went out in a blaze of glory over the weekend. Suspect a microprocessor burned up, waiting for the Sears Tech to show up, but it literally shot massive blue sparks at me then smoked out.

Then I went shopping in my car without AC. Planned to be back early but went back to the store to buy the groceries I forgot.

Then I made up some freezer meals for a new mom...

Then I drove my daughter around town for her shopping...

Then I came home to clean house and fix dinner.

I had fun writing though even if it was not the best.

Thanks for making me look good.

Thanks for helping wikiHow grow into something beautiful.

Dvortygirl, thanks for the 1000's of great edits and RC's that you do! But, once in a while we all miss a valuable diamond because it appears to be a worthless rock.

Just thought you should know that I really liked the "content" of this reverted contribution:

  1. 00:10, August 21, 2007 Dvortygirl m (Reverted edits by 72.197.205.196 (Talk); changed back to last version by Benrubes)
  2. 20:51, August 20, 2007 72.197.205.196 (tip)

"Revision as of 20:51, August 20, 2007":

  • dont think you are very pretty and "expect" people are looking at you, it makes it worst TRUST ME!!!!!

10 months later, there it was in the "history" -- the article STILL had NO warnings.

Now it is rewritten and formatted as a "warning."

Eat a hot dog. Swim in a pool. Barbecue lunch. Watch a parade. Wave an American flag. Wear red, white, or blue clothes. Light up fireworks or watch a night show.

Anything you choose to do on 4th of July, be safe and have fun nonetheless.

Happy 4th.

Hi, Dvortygirl,

Regarding your post on build a whachamacallit chair, I wrote the article tongue in cheek, but have added content and tried to make the steps easier to follow, including adding a cut list (I didn't use a tape measure or angle square on the original). If you have a chance, can you reread it and see if it seems like there is enough information to actually build it? Having a How to that no one knows How to do seems pointless to me, but the idea behind the chair is that it is lightweight, cheap, and easy to build.

Oh...sorry to ask...but do you ever think of Archiving?...us poor folks with a dial-up connection have to wait forever to post on your talk page (but, you are worth it )!

Hope you have had a great weekend!

Hi, Teresa recommended I touch bases with you on "How To Calculate How Much Money You Need To Retire". Being that I'm approaching retirement myself and have an inclination towards math I have some ideas about the article. Mostly I can contribute to the later Excel part and have outlined possible changes. I'm also familiar with sources on Social Security so can correct the percentage of income SS replaces.

I just wrote my first article "How to Manage Priorities With Excel" under a new (more professional) login RMunsonNJ. I will be writing some other articles to get this editing bit down before editing the Retirement article. Future correspondence will be from RMunsonNJ.

There's also a related topic "How to Drawdown Your Retirement Savings" that I want to write and am currently doing some research on - reading articles on the AAII (American Association of Individual Investors) web site.

Congratulations, Dvortygirl/archive2! The article you contributed to, How to Enter a Cleanroom, has reached the highest honor for an article on wikiHow. It is to be brought into the Spotlight as an example of wikiHow's panoply of high-quality work! For 8-10 days starting on September 13th, 2008, your article will be displayed on the home page with a high definition photograph and a short blurb describing it. As tens of thousands of people visit the front page daily, your page is probably going to have a lot of traffic. Here are some ways you can prepare your article for the crowds!

  • Add more images to your article. Click "Edit this Page" and then click the "Add a photo" link at the bottom of the article (or if in Advanced Editor, click "Find Free Photos" on the left under Editing Tools) to get started. If you need help with this, feel free to ask a member of the Help Team or post in the forums.
  • Polish your author page so that the many people who read your article can learn more about you and what else you've written here.
  • Learn how to Revert Vandalism in wikiHow. Since we usually leave all articles open for editing, occasionally Spotlight articles are vandalized. You can easily fix those problems if they occur.
  • Pat yourself on the back! Writing a top-quality article worthy of Spotlight status is an amazing accomplishment. As one of the authors, you've played a critical role in making wikiHow the world's greatest how-to manual. Thanks!

Hey! I was just reading Perform the Missing Card Illusion (new title - what do you think of it?) and I had a question about the two sets of cards. I see that in the second set of cards, the 7 was dropped, but why was the jack replaced by a 9? Based on the instructions (maybe I misread?) wouldn't you want to place a jack of a different suit in the second set, rather than introduce a new number and get rid of a face?
