Hi Peter. I just wanted to say thanks for your Password Project, it looks very thorough. I'm seeing the NFDs appear in NFD Advanced so am ready to review them at 7 days.

Hmmm, I see that I changed the title to meet our brand name policy. I'm fine with leaving it up, since it technically doesn't violate policy, and since the author has expressed concern. Your thoughts?

Peter,

Hey there, I was just hopping on NFD guardian and found a bunch of articles related to the password project. Thanks so much for taking on the password project and being very thorough about it! Sorry , to be commenting at this late date!

I agree that 90% of the articles on the deletion list deserve death. There are a handful though that look like they are legit topics that deserve a de-spammed version. For example:

  • http://www.wikihow.com/Recover-a-Forgotten-Windows-XP-Password
  • http://www.wikihow.com/Login-to-Windows-XP-as-the-Administrator

Do you know enough about those topics to de-spam them, so we can keep them? I personally don't, but I might be able to find someone around here who does. Let me know.

As for the deletions on the repetitive ad posts, I might suggest that rather than NFD|adv them we NFd|dup or merge them. The joy of that solution is that it will create a redirect (to the de-spammed article) so the same topic just doesn't get re-created.

Also since this topic is so popular with spammers, we should probably maintain a few high quality articles on the topic. And then protect the pages from editing, so they don't get spammed up.

WDYT?

Oh and I might ad this one to the list of articles worth saving too:

http://www.wikihow.com/Hack-Onto-a-Windows-Vista-Account

Can it be done at all?

At 18:20, Jan 31, 2012

JackHerrickJack Herrick said:

Very good idea. If I have time, I'm going to start doing some of this today. I'll create a few "target" pages where we can create spam-free high quality pages. Right now they will still be bad pages, but we can get them fixed up somehow. I'll then start re-directing the unsalvageable junk towards those pages.

At the end of it, instead of having 100 pages that are spammy. We will have 10 or so that are good. We might want to than protect those pages so they don't become spam magnets again.

At 20:03, Jan 31, 2012

JackHerrickJack Herrick said:

OK, I started doing this, but it was much harder than I thought! I made some progress, I removed the NFD tags for these articles with the idea that I would get them re-written to a non-spam version. I then added them to the list Merge Targets that Need De-spamming. If you know how to de-spam these that would be great.

Merge Targets that Need De-spamming These articles can become merge targets, but will need to be significantly improved.

If you don't know the topics well enough, or don't have the time to de-spam and improve the above, I'll figure out another way to do it. I might know folks around here who can help clean that junk up.

As for the other articles, I tried to merge a few and succeeded in some places. Others weren't a perfect match. Hopefully the NFD system cleans most of them out.

Thank you so much for going through these articles to get rid of this spam! You truly rock!

Hi Peter!

If you vote to keep an article like Remove Scratches from Any Dvd, could you slap a copyedit tag on it? That way, if another vote is keep also, we can get it cleaned up. The copyedit backlog is going to be my next pet project when I get more experience boosting and am of more use there. I'm still brand spankin' new, so if there's a reason not to do that, let me know. :) Thanks!

Hi Peter! Just saw you redirected a redirect to Deleted Article. Is it always preferable that a deleted article redirect to a good article? I can stick one in there in NFD Guardian, but I had just read on the forums that if they don't have an article to point to, they'd just point to the generic deleted article page which was fine. (Nobody's looking for them. ;) Just let me know (and Teresa too, since the forum post was to her).

Hi Peter,

I don't see any problem with adding info on factoring non-quadratic trinomials, as long as it were self-contained in its own method or a couple tips. I'm not worried about the page getting merged, but that info does fall under the title. :)

I think I removed a solution method that didn't involve factoring, but if I made a misstep and removed helpful info, perhaps you could manually add it back to the current version?

I can understand wikiPhoto, they deal with images, and don't read text... I wrote a page about building something with a real photo of a guy ripping a board with a table saw, they replaced it with a cartoon of a guy's fingers two inches from the saw blade, cross cutting the board (and hopefully, the fingers)... so I don't look at images any more....

Are you going to hand around and see the new spam techniques your arch-enemies have developed? They really have gotten pretty sophisticated, which just makes it more fun to watch them play, and since I was de-admined, they aren't my problem any more.

BTW, I find political correctness just lowers the bar (and hence the quality), so I don't spend sleepless nights worrying about it.
